Turmeric
Turmeric is known as the “golden spice” and has been a staple in traditional medicine and cuisine for centuries. The key to turmeric’s therapeutic properties lies in curcumin, its active compound. Curcumin is renowned for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. While the curcumin content is relatively low in turmeric, there are ways to enhance its potency. A popular way is to combine it with black pepper, which contains piperine, a compound that enhances curcumin absorption.
Beyond its health benefits, turmeric adds flavor and a stunning color. Turmeric adds a warm, earthy taste popularly used in curries, stews, rice dishes, and beverages. Here’s an example of a warm drink that uses the turmeric and black pepper combination. It’s a great drink to help alleviate bloating:
1 TBSP apple cider vinegar
½ juice of an organic lime
¼ tsp baking soda
Let fizz out
Top with at least ½ cup of warm water
Pinch of cayenne
Pinch of turmeric
Pinch of black pepper
