Healthy Over the Holidays

We all wonder how to stay healthy over the holidays. The holiday season hits everyone differently with the commonality of emotional. Many people get in the spirit of celebration, which can bring an abundance of treats and a busy schedule. Some resist the jolly and surround themselves with comfort food. Either way, here are some tips. They may seem basic but we all need these reminders

Mindful Eating

-savor each bite: slow down, enjoy the flavors and textures. Eating slowly also allows your body to recognize when it’s full.

-choose wisely: prioritize your favorite holiday treats. Savor them in moderation and opt for smaller portions.

Stay Active

-schedule workouts: plan out in advance, even if they’re shorter than usual. Consistency is key.

-include family/friend activities: turn gatherings into active events. Take a family walk, play outdoor games, or organize a friendly competitive match.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

-water first: it’s easy to forget about water when there’s an abundance of festive beverages. Carry a reusable water bottle to ensure you’re sipping throughout the day.

-limit alcohol intake: try to keep it in moderation and make sure you have water between drinks…or during! A great tip to slow down alcohol is to choose a drink that you like but isn’t your favorite. This really encourages sipping.

Plan Ahead for Healthy Options

-bring a healthy dish: if possible, contribute a nutritious dish to share. This especially goes for people with dietary restrictions. This ensures you have a healthy option available.

-balance your plate: fill your plate with a mis of lean proteins, colorful vegetables, and whole grains.

Prioritize Sleep

-Create a relaxing bedtime routine: wind down before bedtime with activities like reading or gentle stretching.

-Stick to a schedule: try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends and holidays.

Manage Stress

-Practice Mindfulness: incorporate mindfulness into your daily routine to help manage stress and stay present.

-Set Realistic Expectations: don't strive for perfection. Set realistic goals and prioritize self-care.

-Don’t beat yourself up. The next day and even the next moment are a chance to get right back on track

Listen to Your Body

-Recognize hunger and fullness: eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied. Slowing down allows you to realize when you’re full.

-Rest when needed: if you’re feeling fatigued, allow yourself time to rest and recharge.

Wishing you a healthy and happy holiday season!
